Demands rise for quality mobile broadband: Wireless surveillance a top use case

Sep 30, 2015

Technology Users.jpgWireless connectivity has changed considerably in recent years. Consumers and enterprise users in a range of different industries are now demanding higher-quality, higher-speed network support, making mobile connectivity more crucial than ever before.

These are the findings from a recent Transparency Market Research report, which underlines the importance of reliable wireless connectivity. This report showed how mobility needs are expanding across different industries, and how video surveillance has become an important use case for mobile broadband support.

The need for reliable mobile connectivity to support surveillance
WhaTech noted that mobile has become key for users in a number of different sectors, including for oil and gas companies, transportation organizations, emergency services, utility providers and others. Users in these industries leverage mobile for a range of reasons, including to access video feeds for surveillance purposes.

“The growing dependence of handheld devices on video features in times of tactical communication substantially increased the demand for mobile broadband for critical communication,” the report stated, according to WhaTech. “Owing to enhanced safety concerns in different manufacturing industries, the need for advanced mission-critical operations has arisen.”

Top use cases for mobile surveillance
But just how are these groups leveraging their mobile connections for video surveillance? Many organizations now rely on wireless surveillance systems supported by mesh networks. Let’s take a look at two examples:

  • Transportation: A number of transportation organizations depend on mobile broadband to support their wireless surveillance systems. This technology not only helps ensure that trains, buses or other vehicles are operating appropriately and on schedule, but it can also be beneficial for rider safety.
For example, the Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation installed a wireless video surveillance solution in a Korean subway after a fire claimed the lives of nearly 200 people. With the high-bandwidth mobile wireless surveillance system in place, SMRT officials now have a bird’s-eye view of the subway’s 148 stations and more than 2 million daily riders.
  • Industrial automation: Wireless surveillance has also become more popular in the oil and gas and other industrial sectors to help ensure the smooth operation of automated processes, keep an eye on heavy machine assets and protect employees.
Mobile broadband-based surveillance and communication is also a considerable advantage for construction projects, as evidenced by the Dubai Tower. During construction, workers had difficulties communicating with one another via the traditional walkie-talkie system. As a result, they turned to a mesh network to better support the critical communications that kept workers apprised of one another’s actions.

Wireless mesh market
As demands rise for reliable mobile connectivity, many organizations are discovering the benefits of a wireless mesh network to deliver the connectivity they need. Besides being a high-quality source of connectivity, this technology is also self-healing – if one node within the system goes down, the other nodes will compensate, keeping the network up and operating as it should.
