Wireless systems help monitor construction sites

2015-01-09 Construction Sites.jpgConstruction sites can be dangerous areas. Protecting the workers that help put new buildings together – as well as the people that reside in the surrounding area – has to be a top priority. That’s why when Beatty Development began construction on the Harbor Point Baltimore in Maryland, it elected to install an aerial surveillance system.

Harbor Point Baltimore is located on a former chromium processing site. Some of the supports for new buildings will end up disturbing dust that contains the chemical. Sensors, supported by Firetide wireless surveillance solutions have been brought in that are able to monitor the dust levels that are present in the air. Should a concerning concentration of chromium start to appear, necessary steps can be taken.

“Demonstrated, effective measures will be taken to prevent dust from leaving the work zone,” Harbor Point stated on its website. “These measures include using water misting to suppress dust, limiting the size of the open area at any one time, and placing clean materials over impacted soil so that dust from the impacted soil cannot be generated, as well as other best management practices.”

These issues were averted, however, thanks to Firetide’s wireless technology. Firetide helped to implement a system that would not be reliant on physical connections and susceptible to potential damage. The network has been approved by the EPA to handle the important task it is being implemented for.

Wireless monitoring essential for safety
Wired connections on a construction site can be a serious issue. Due to the nature of the work and the presence of powerful machinery, there is a significant risk that cables can be severed and require repair – or even go unnoticed. This may stand in the way of continuing with the project, ultimately holding back the entire schedule.

These kinds of deployments require the kind of simplified connectivity that only wireless networks can provide. For those organizations that are in need of wireless monitoring systems of any kind, turn first to Firetide.
