2014-10-08 Police Car.jpgBoca Raton is a well-known affluent, 29-square-mile area in Florida boasting 85,000 citizens. While the area isn’t known for a high crime rate, officers wanted to bolster their law enforcement abilities. As a result, officials began investigating video surveillance solutions.

According to SecurityInfoWatch, city decision-makers began their investigation into the technology with tours of video surveillance deployments in other cities. This enabled them to select a solution that would best suit the needs of the city’s 193 police officers. Officials included the Boca Raton IT director, department of municipal services, the city manager and the police department in their decisions and examination of the technology.

After considerable background research, the group electing to deploy a wireless video and traffic surveillance system including components from Ocularis, OnSSI and Firetide. Firetide’s wireless mesh infrastructure is the backbone of the surveillance solution, enabling the city to grow the footprint of their existing network to support the system. Through a grant, Boca Raton officials were able to purchase and deploy 10 Firetide wireless nodes throughout the city.

With this system in place, officers can now view feeds from more than 200 cameras strategically placed in specific neighborhoods and intersections of Boca Raton. The department also has plans to expand the system in the near future. This has made investigations much easier for the department and bolsters the safety of drivers, citizens and visitors in the city.
